Consumer Data Right and Open Banking: What It Means for Mortgage Brokers

The Consumer Data Right (CDR) is Australia's open banking framework. It gives consumers control over their financial data and allows accredited third parties to access that data with the consumer's consent. For mortgage brokers, it's the most significant industry development since aggregation.

The most immediate application for brokers is product comparison. Under the CDR, lenders must publish their mortgage product data in a standardised, machine-readable format. This includes interest rates, fees, features, eligibility criteria, and comparison rates — all available via API, updated daily. No more manually checking lender websites or relying on rate tables that might be weeks out of date.

BrokerIQ uses CDR product data to power its lender matching engine. When you build a scenario, the platform automatically matches against live CDR data from 50+ lenders. This means the rates and products you see are what lenders are actually offering right now, not cached data from a third-party aggregator.

The second application is income and expense verification. With the client's consent, brokers can access their bank transaction data via the CDR, providing a detailed picture of income, spending patterns, and existing commitments. This speeds up the application process and reduces the need for clients to manually gather payslips and bank statements.

The third application is client engagement. CDR data can trigger proactive alerts — for example, notifying you when a client's fixed rate is about to expire, or when a better product becomes available for their situation. This turns reactive servicing into proactive client management.

The CDR is still evolving. Action initiation — the ability to initiate payments or applications via the CDR — is on the roadmap but not yet live for mortgages. When it arrives, it will enable faster switching, automatic repricing, and streamlined applications.

For brokers, the message is clear: tools that leverage CDR data will have a significant advantage over those that don't. The data is free, standardised, and updated daily. The question is whether your software takes advantage of it.
